A viral TikTok video by South African vet Amir Anwary has sparked debate on the dog breeds he recommends pet owners avoid. In the video, which has garnered over three million views, Anwary shared his “brutally honest” perspective on five dog breeds that, while seemingly ideal, can lead to costly vet bills and demanding lifestyle changes.
Anwary’s list includes the dachshund, which he describes as both “lovely” and “stubborn.” The breed, prone to separation anxiety and excessive barking, also faces health issues like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IBDD) and obesity. He cautions that dachshund owners must be vigilant about their dogs’ well-being.
Next on the list is the French Bulldog, a breed notorious for its frequent health problems. Anwary refers to them as “adorable little abominations” due to their ongoing struggles with breathing difficulties, skin conditions, and back problems. Despite their charm, their health issues often make them regular visitors to the vet, which discourages Anwary from owning one.
Anwary also points out high-energy working breeds like the Belgian Malinois and Border Collie. Both require constant mental and physical stimulation, and without it, they can become destructive. He describes Border Collies as having “ADHD,” needing a level of attention he admits he could not provide.
Surprisingly, the Labrador made the list as well. While beloved for their friendly nature, Labradors are prone to overeating and obesity. Anwary warns that a Labrador’s insatiable appetite combined with a sedentary lifestyle can lead to perpetual weight gain, a challenge he finds difficult to manage in his own household.
Anwary, who has a strong social media presence, regularly shares his pet advice with his followers.
