Regular Dog Walking Found to Improve Mobility and Reduce Falls in Older Adults

by Lisa

New research from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) at Trinity College Dublin reveals significant benefits of regular dog walking for older adults. Published in the Journals of Gerontology, the study investigates the role of dog walking in preventing falls and mobility problems among seniors.

Falls are a major concern for older adults, often leading to fractures, loss of independence, increased healthcare needs, and higher mortality rates. Approximately 30% of individuals aged 70+ in Ireland experience falls annually, with 1 in 8 seeking emergency care for fall-related injuries. As the aging population grows, preventing falls has become a critical health priority.

Study Overview: The study analyzed data from over 4,100 participants aged 60 and older, utilizing TILDA Wave 5 data. It compared those who walked their dogs regularly (≥4 days/week) with those who either did not own dogs or did not walk their dogs regularly. Key measures included falls, fear of falling, and mobility, with mobility assessed using the Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG) test.

Key Findings:

Improved Mobility: Regular dog walkers performed the TUG test significantly faster (10.3 seconds) than non-dog walkers (11.7 seconds), suggesting better mobility and reduced fall risk.

Reduced Falls: Dog walkers were 40% less likely to experience unexplained falls.

Lower Fear of Falling: Dog walkers were 20% less likely to report a fear of falling, a common barrier to maintaining mobility.

The study also underscores the role of dog walking in promoting physical activity and enhancing social interaction, both vital for maintaining independence in later life. While overall physical activity levels were similar between dog walkers and non-dog walkers, walking a dog appeared to provide unique benefits, potentially due to the social interaction and sense of purpose it fosters.

Professor Robert Briggs, co-author of the study, commented on the importance of dog walking in improving both physical and mental health for older adults. Dr. Eleanor Gallagher, lead author, highlighted the accessibility and simplicity of dog walking as an effective way to improve overall well-being and confidence among seniors.

This research emphasizes how regular dog walking is a straightforward and enjoyable activity that not only boosts physical health but also contributes to mental well-being, making it a valuable practice for older adults.
