A woman is standing her ground after her sister, Emily, named her baby boy “Charlie” — the same name as her golden retriever, Charlie. In a Reddit post, the woman explained that she adopted her dog four years ago and that Charlie has been part of the family ever since, responding to the name and having it on all his paperwork.
However, after Emily’s son was born and named Charlie, she asked the woman to rename her dog, citing concerns about confusion and disrespect, especially during family gatherings. Emily expressed that sharing a name with a dog was unfair to her son.
Despite the request, the woman firmly rejected the idea of renaming her pet. “Charlie has been his name for four years; he knows it, responds to it, and it’s on all his paperwork. Changing it would be weird for him (and for me),” she wrote.
Her sister’s reaction was far from understanding, with Emily getting upset and accusing her of making it harder for her son by potentially leading to jokes and confusion. The situation has caused tension, with some family members saying the woman is being “stubborn” while others, like her father, sided with her.
The woman ended her post by questioning if she was in the wrong, as she feels her dog’s name shouldn’t need to change just because the family chose the same name for the baby. Reddit users overwhelmingly supported her, with some humorously suggesting that Emily change her son’s name instead.
“Charlie the dog is already ‘Charlie.’ It shouldn’t be a big deal. Baby Charlie doesn’t care, only the parents do. If it was a problem, they could have easily prevented it,” one commenter said. Another wrote, “Suggest that she changes her son’s name to Spot or Rover.”
In the end, it appears the name mix-up is causing more drama than it should, with Reddit users agreeing that the dog’s name should remain unchanged.
