A two-year-old golden retriever named Delta has been hailed as a hero after playing a pivotal role in locating a missing 13-year-old girl in Courtenay on Wednesday morning, as temperatures plunged below freezing.
The girl was reported missing from her home around 10 p.m. on Tuesday in the east Courtenay area. Upon learning of the disappearance, the RCMP immediately launched a search. Just after midnight, they called upon the expertise of Comox Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR), prompting a swift response.
Within hours, 15 search-and-rescue volunteers, including Delta, a newly trained search dog, were on the ground. Delta, who joined the team just recently, has quickly earned recognition for his skills. Around 2:30 a.m., the search efforts bore fruit when Delta successfully located the missing teen.
“Delta made the crucial connection with the girl, allowing her to safely join the team and be reunited with her family,” said Paul Berry of Comox Valley Search and Rescue. “This is exactly the outcome we were hoping for.”
Delta’s handler, who has worked alongside other dogs on the team, praised the golden retriever for his precision and focus during the search. The Comox Valley Search and Rescue team, which now includes four dogs, is known for its rapid response in missing persons cases.
Berry also highlighted how Delta’s successful deployment underscores the effectiveness of the search-and-rescue network in British Columbia. “This is a perfect example of how well our system works, and it’s the dedication of volunteers like those at CVSAR that make it all possible.”
Comox Valley Search and Rescue, a volunteer-run organization, has been serving the region for over 40 years. The team operates 24/7, covering a vast area from Oyster River to Cook Creek, and from Buttle Lake to the Strait of Georgia, including Denman and Hornby islands. Their swift and coordinated response continues to be a vital resource for the community.
