Monty, a Giant Schnauzer, took home the prestigious Best in Show award at the 149th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on February 11, 2025, held at Madison Square Garden in New York. Monty outshone six other finalists to win the top prize, marking his third consecutive appearance in the finals. He had previously triumphed in the American Kennel Club’s big show in December, further cementing his reputation as a top competitor.
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is one of the most highly regarded events in the U.S. dog show world, with each dog being judged based on how closely it matches the ideal for its breed. While winners receive trophies and ribbons, there is no cash prize.
Finalists Included:
- Neal, a Bichon Frisé
- Archer, a Skye Terrier
- Bourbon, a Whippet and repeat runner-up
- Comet, a Shih Tzu
- Mercedes, a German Shepherd (second place last year)
- Freddie, an English Springer Spaniel
Monty’s victory is particularly notable as he has now competed in the finals for three consecutive years. All dogs in the Westminster competition are titled champions, and many also serve as household pets or take on other roles like therapy, search-and-rescue, or service dogs.
Other Highlights:
Brina, a Neapolitan Mastiff, competed in the “working” breed category. Weighing in at over 71 kg, Brina impressed attendees with her size and intelligence.
Tyra, a Miniature Bull Terrier, also participated, showcasing the breed’s mix of big dog personality in a small package.
The event was full of excitement as spectators cheered on the competitors, with some even shouting out the names of their favorite dogs, like Lumpy, a Pekingese, and Tuffy, a Golden Retriever.
Other Competitions:
Vanish, a Border Collie, won the agility championship.
Willie, an Australian Shepherd, took first place in the obedience competition.
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a celebration of purebred dogs’ diversity and abilities, and this year, Monty’s victory stood out among many talented contenders.
