WAYNE’S WORLD: The Wonderful Canine

by Lisa

Dogs have always been called “Man’s Best Friend,” and there’s a phrase I particularly love: “The more I talk to people, the more I like my dog.” It’s so true. Although I haven’t had the pleasure of owning a dog for 45 years, I’ve spent plenty of time with the beloved pets of my friends, and I’ve seen firsthand how much joy and companionship they bring. Like people, dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard pet owners, after the loss of their furry friend who lived a typical 12 to 15 years, say they’ll never get another dog. But, more often than not, the temptation proves too great. A couple of years later, they’re welcoming a new furry companion into their home, eager for the joy, security, and love only a dog can provide.

One of the most popular breeds my friend has loved over the past 35 years is the Labrador Retriever. Labradors are known for their playful, gentle, and enthusiastic nature, which makes them a perfect addition to a family, especially one with children. Their personalities are a gift – they offer loyalty, joy, and a sense of calm.

It’s important to remember that owning a dog is a big commitment. A dog isn’t a toy or a passing fancy. Just like children, they grow up, and the cute puppy stage fades. When that happens, the responsibility to care for them remains. Too often, people promise to take care of their dog but then back out once the initial charm wears off. It’s crucial to follow through and provide the same love and attention as the dog matures.

Though I still yearn for the companionship of a dog, my busy retirement and social life make it difficult for me to own one at this time. But for those of you who can make the commitment and who treat your dog with care and affection, you’ll find that the rewards are greater than just having a face to lick. The bond is priceless.
