At the upcoming Just For Laughs festival in Vancouver, there’s a unique twist to the usual comedy scene: dogs will be in the audience. The Big Dog Energy shows are specially designed for dog owners, giving them the chance to enjoy a night of laughs with their furry companions by their side.
Amy Walsh, the organizer and an Irish comedian, came up with the idea a few years ago while working as a dog sitter. She spoke with clients who wished there were more activities they could do with their dogs, leading her to combine her two passions — comedy and dogs — into one event. What started as a single show at The MOTN has since grown. After the success of last year’s show, Walsh decided to add a second show for this year.
The shows are just like regular comedy performances, but with a twist: the audience is full of dogs. Walsh clarifies that while some comedians incorporate dog-related material, it’s not a requirement. The focus is on providing a comfortable space for dog owners to bring their pets along for the fun. Sometimes, dogs might wander up to the stage if they manage to slip away from their owners, but the atmosphere is generally relaxed and friendly.
Walsh mentions that before and after the shows, the dog owners often mingle and chat about their pets, which creates a nice, warm energy in the room. Initially, the dogs might be excited to meet new people and other dogs, but by the time the comedy starts, most settle down, with some even napping through the show.
Tickets for the Big Dog Energy show on February 22 at Little Mountain Gallery are priced at $26, and dogs can attend for free. Cats, however, are not allowed. Walsh emphasizes that while it’s a dog-friendly event, you don’t have to own a dog to attend – just be okay with the presence of lots of dogs in the audience. And, of course, treats are encouraged!
It’s a fun and quirky way to bring pet owners together for some laughter, with a little extra tail-wagging on the side.
