Luna, a spirited three-year-old Chihuahua mix from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, has captured hearts across North America and is currently sitting in second place in Modern Dog’s annual “America’s Favorite Dog” competition. Rescued by Rebecca Lyons and now living in Comox Valley, Luna’s journey from the streets of Mexico to becoming a beloved companion has inspired many.
Luna, with her distinctive underbite and piercing eyes, has become a social media sensation as she rises through the ranks of the contest. Lyons affectionately describes Luna as a playful dog with a personality that shines through her unique look. “Her eyes are so unusual,” Lyons says. “And she’s always doing something funny, like running off with my socks!”
Luna’s playful nature extends to her training as well. After completing Basic Training at PetSmart, Luna is now working on Intermediate Training, with plans to eventually become a certified Therapy Dog. Lyons wants to help other pets like Luna by setting up a veterinary fund if Luna ever needs care, and also hopes to adopt a playmate for her, whether locally or through the Sula Society, where Luna was originally rescued.
Getting Luna to her forever home wasn’t without its challenges. After flying from Mexico with a “Flight Angel,” Luna escaped right before her flight and spent several days on the run. It took a team effort from the Sula Society, neighbors, and hotel guests to safely bring her back, proving just how determined and fast Luna can be — especially when she gets “the zoomies.”
Lyons often wonders about Luna’s past on the streets of Mexico, and though Luna can’t share her story, she is grateful that the rescue made it possible for her to be adopted into a loving home.
Now, Luna is setting her sights on taking the top prize in the “America’s Favorite Dog” competition, but regardless of the outcome, Lyons says she wants to give back to the rescue that helped Luna start a new life.
