A dog named Sassy, a tan and white mixed-breed, was euthanized after veterinary assessments determined it was the only way to stop her prolonged suffering. The decision came after the animal was found severely neglected and in critical condition.
The Te Kūiti woman responsible for Sassy’s care was sentenced today after pleading guilty to charges of failing to meet her dog’s basic needs, including adequate food and necessary veterinary treatment.
In August 2023, animal control officers from the Waitomo District Council responded to reports of neglect at the woman’s property. Upon arrival, they found Sassy unresponsive inside a filthy kennel, surrounded by feces and trash. Initially, officers feared the dog had already died, as she was cold to the touch, unable to stand, and displaying severe distress.
A veterinary assessment revealed that Sassy was emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from multiple severe health issues, including ulcerative wounds and gastric ulceration. Her condition was deemed critical, and euthanasia was recommended to prevent further pain.
A post-mortem examination confirmed the extent of the abuse, revealing that Sassy had endured weeks, if not months, of neglect, leading to starvation and dehydration.
SPCA Chief Executive Todd Westwood expressed his heartbreak over the case, stating that Sassy’s suffering could have been easily prevented with proper care. “No animal should ever endure such unimaginable pain due to neglect,” Westwood said.
The owner admitted to knowing about Sassy’s deteriorating health but explained that financial constraints prevented her from seeking veterinary help. She was sentenced to 280 hours of community work, ordered to pay $1,738 in veterinary reparations, and banned from owning dogs for 15 years.
