It’s every dog parent’s nightmare – you’re in the middle of a peaceful sleep when you hear that unmistakable sound of retching. Upset stomachs in dogs can happen for a variety of reasons, from food changes to environmental triggers or aging. If your dog is experiencing mild stomach discomfort, here are three home remedies that might help.
1. Fasting
It may sound harsh, but fasting is often an effective remedy. By withholding food (and limiting water intake slightly) for 12 to 24 hours, your dog’s stomach can rest and recover. This gives the digestive system a chance to calm down and heal itself, just as it would in humans. This is typically suitable for adult dogs with mild stomach issues, but make sure your dog stays hydrated.
2. Rice Water
Rice is a gentle, digestible food that can help settle an upset stomach. You can make warm rice water by boiling 1 cup of rice in 1 quart of water for about 20 minutes, then straining the rice. Once cooled, offer your dog the rice water. If you want to go a step further, you can make rice porridge by adding 1 cup of cooked rice to 3 quarts of low-boiling water or homemade broth, cooking for another 20 minutes, and serving the mushy mixture.
3. Food Additions
Certain foods can be easy on your dog’s stomach and help relieve discomfort. Pumpkin, sweet potatoes, bananas, and oatmeal are all gentle, soothing options to add to your dog’s meal. These foods are packed with fiber and can support your dog’s digestion during mild upset stomachs.
If your dog’s symptoms don’t improve within a couple of days, or if they worsen, it’s time to contact your vet. Always monitor for signs of severe distress, such as lethargy or dehydration, and never hesitate to seek professional help if needed.
