Susie Curteis-Lateo, a woman from Wells, has made an impressive leap into the world of dog shows, qualifying for Crufts just three months after starting her journey. Curteis-Lateo, who owns a dog hotel in the area, has been training her standard long-haired dachshund, Swansford Priyankadora, for about six months. She is now set to compete at the prestigious dog show, which will take place in Birmingham from March 6-9.
Curteis-Lateo, who describes herself as both “nervous and excited” about the upcoming event, initially sought a new hobby with her dog. After visiting Crufts last year, she decided to purchase a puppy and start showing. Despite only having competed in a handful of dog shows, she was already placed third in the hound class at her first competition.
Reflecting on her rapid progress, Curteis-Lateo admits, “I thought it would be at least another year before we could actually compete at Crufts,” but now, with her qualifications in hand, she is preparing for the big event. She credits the warm and supportive dog show community for helping her along the way.
Outside of the show ring, Curteis-Lateo sees Swansford Priyankadora as “just a normal dog.” She highlights the misconception that show dogs are always “proper” and reminds people that her dachshund enjoys running around in the mud just like any other dog.
Though relatively new to competitive dog showing, Curteis-Lateo’s quick success serves as a testament to her dedication and the bond she shares with her dog. As Crufts approaches, she looks forward to the experience, no matter the outcome.
