Humans Misread Dog Emotions, ASU Study Shows

by Lisa

A new study from Arizona State University reveals that humans often misunderstand their dogs’ emotions, primarily due to contextual biases and anthropomorphizing. Researchers Holly Molinaro and Clive Wynne conducted two experiments that highlight how people misperceive dog behavior, leading to a false understanding of their emotional states.

In the study, the researchers presented video footage of dogs in both positive (receiving a treat or leash) and negative (being chastised or encountering a vacuum cleaner) situations. They found that people often judged a dog’s emotional state based on the context rather than the dog’s actual behavior.

“When people saw a dog reacting to a vacuum cleaner, they assumed the dog was agitated,” Molinaro explained. “But when the same dog reacted to a leash, the assumption was that the dog was happy.” This shift in perception was based on the situation, not the dog’s body language or facial expressions.

Molinaro and Wynne also pointed out that human projection of emotions onto dogs—known as anthropomorphizing—further clouds understanding. While humans and dogs share a long bond, the two species process emotions differently. As Molinaro noted, the assumption that dogs and humans experience emotions in the same way is not supported by scientific evidence.

The study emphasizes the need for pet owners to recognize these biases and focus more closely on their dogs’ individual behaviors. By doing so, owners can develop a more accurate understanding of their pets’ emotional states, which can strengthen their bond.

To better interpret their dog’s feelings, the researchers suggest that owners be mindful of their own biases and take time to observe their dogs’ unique emotional cues and behaviors. The full study is published in the journal Anthrozoos.
