Build a Durable Outdoor Kennel to Contain Your Energetic Dog

by Lisa

If your dog is constantly tearing up your house due to pent-up energy, building an outdoor kennel could be the perfect solution. For dog owners like myself, who have experienced the chaos of a hyperactive dog left indoors for long periods, an outdoor enclosure offers a safe and spacious environment for them to burn off their zoomies.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create a functional and secure outdoor dog kennel.

1. Choose the Right Location for the Kennel

The first step in building a dog kennel is selecting the right location. While the ground doesn’t need to be perfectly flat, aim for a consistent grade to avoid excessive digging. The size of your available space will determine the size of the kennel you can build. For example, I used two 15×5 feet dog kennels, combining them into a long 35×5 feet area to give my dog plenty of space to run.

2. Order Your Kennel Materials

Buying online is the best way to get a wide variety of kennel materials. I opted for a chain-link fencing style, which provides durability and visibility. You’ll find plenty of options for kennel sides and accessories on the internet, so choose one that best suits your dog’s needs.

3. Prepare the Kennel Site

If your dog isn’t a digger, you can skip the next step and move straight to assembly. However, for dogs like my Siberian husky, who love to dig, extra precautions are necessary. I decided to use gravel and buried cinder blocks to prevent my dog from escaping by digging underneath the kennel. Start by marking the area with wooden stakes and mason twine. The area should be 8 inches wider and longer than your kennel’s dimensions.

Consult with a contractor or breeder to determine how deep you should dig. I dug 6 inches to ensure that my husky wouldn’t find a way out.

4. Dig and Level the Ground

Next, use a long-handled, flat-blade shovel to level the ground. The key is to ensure the area is even and smooth before proceeding. Insert stakes at both ends and run twine between them, using a level to keep it aligned. Adjust the depth as you go, checking frequently with a ruler or the level to ensure accuracy.

5. Place Cinder Blocks

To form the kennel’s base, position the cinder blocks around the perimeter of the dig site. Use stakes and twine to check the placement and keep the blocks level. This will create a solid foundation for the kennel walls to sit on.

6. Add Gravel for the Base

Next, cover the area with gravel to create a comfortable surface for your dog. I used 50-pound bags of gravel, distributing them evenly across the site. For a 6-inch depth, I needed to add a second layer of gravel. Keep in mind that the smaller the gravel, the easier it will be on your dog’s paws. Use online calculators to estimate how many bags you’ll need.

7. Assemble the Kennel

Once the foundation is ready, begin assembling the kennel panels. Most kennel kits are simple to put together, requiring basic tools like a socket wrench or crescent wrench. Start by attaching two panels to form a corner, then add the remaining panels to complete the structure.

8. Add a Cover

Finally, don’t forget to add a cover to the kennel. Most dogs are capable of jumping higher than we expect, so a secure cover will prevent any escape attempts. This addition will also provide shade and shelter, ensuring your dog stays comfortable and safe.

Building a dog kennel is a straightforward project that provides your dog with a secure place to exercise and relax. With a little time and effort, you can create a space that will help channel your dog’s energy and keep them happy while you’re away.
