Prunella, a lovable and spirited dog, has won over the hearts of everyone she meets with her adorable, massive face and fun-loving personality. Yet, despite her charm, she remains patiently waiting for her forever home.
Prunella was discovered as a stray and taken to a city pound in rough shape—beaten up, tired, hungry, and dirty with a patchy coat. After a failed dog introduction, her future looked bleak.
But fate intervened when she found her way to Missouri Pit Bull Rescue (MPR), a small rescue group based in Kansas City.
“She was a bit of a wild woman when she first arrived but quickly turned into a well-behaved, yet fun-loving and upbeat girl,” the shelter shared. “All Pru needed was a bit of training and management.”
The shelter chose the name Prunella, which means “small plum” in Latin, symbolizing perseverance, hope, and thriving in adversity—traits that mirrored her journey.
‘She Has Spent Almost Half Her Life in a Shelter’
This April 7, Prunella will mark two years—730 days—since she first arrived at MPR, and she has spent nearly half her life in a shelter.
“She has spent almost half her life in a shelter,” said Jessica Donahoo, a volunteer with MPR, on Nextdoor. “Our volunteers do everything they can to make sure Pru knows love, comfort, and joy. But no matter how many cuddles or soft beds she gets, nothing can replace a forever family.”
Because Prunella needs to be the only pet in the household, finding her a home has been a challenge. But despite this, Donahoo notes that Prunella remains as happy as ever.
“She’s such a happy-go-lucky girl,” she shared. “She’s not letting it get her down. She’s just as happy as the day she came in.”
A Big Heart for People
Though Prunella may not get along well with other dogs, she has no trouble making friends with humans. She’s known for her joyful attitude and sparkling eyes whenever people are around.
“Everyone is a long-lost friend,” the shelter said. “She usually has a big happy twinkle in her eyes when she’s with people, and you can’t wipe the smile off her face.”
Although Prunella’s compatibility with other dogs is limited, she is a loving companion for humans. The shelter believes she would do best in a home with no other pets and with older children.
Prunella has so many endearing qualities that it’s hard to pick just one. Donahoo remains hopeful that Prunella’s forever family is out there.
“Being loved and well-cared for is most likely a situation she has never known in her life,” Donahoo said. “So there’s no doubt that she will be thrilled when given that precious chance.”
