In the aftermath of the catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on March 28, two golden retrievers have emerged as unlikely symbols of hope and solace. For over 100 hours, these dedicated rescue dogs combed through the rubble in Bangkok, tirelessly searching for survivors. While their efforts have led to the rescue of several individuals, 72 people are still missing, and their families are facing the harrowing reality of uncertainty.
The earthquake, which devastated both Myanmar and parts of Thailand, has left many families reeling, but the presence of the dogs has brought a rare sense of comfort to those suffering. The dogs, dressed in bright orange vests, have spent time in temporary shelters, offering emotional support to grieving families. Their wagging tails and affectionate demeanor provide brief moments of respite for those waiting for news of their loved ones.
One resident, who has lost both her mother and sister in the disaster, shared with Reuters how the dogs’ comforting presence was a small but meaningful source of relief amid her anguish.
These rescue dogs, though essential in locating survivors, also play a crucial psychological role. Experts emphasize that the animals provide much-needed emotional support, helping to alleviate the distress of those affected by the devastation. “A dog has amazing powers, and touching a dog really provides some relief for people—it’s an important source of emotional support,” said a senior K9 handler involved in the operations.
In addition to the canine teams, search-and-rescue efforts continue with the use of thermal imaging equipment, scanners, and rescue robots, all working in tandem to uncover survivors buried beneath the wreckage.
As recovery efforts unfold, both Mandalay and Bangkok are facing significant challenges in providing care to the injured, with critical shortages in healthcare resources. Experts are also investigating potential structural failures that may have contributed to the collapse of buildings, including a 30-story structure in Bangkok believed to have been constructed with substandard materials. The Thai government has launched an official inquiry into the building’s collapse, seeking answers that may explain the scale of the disaster’s impact.
While the physical search for survivors continues, the emotional support provided by these rescue dogs remains an invaluable aspect of the recovery process.
