A Texas animal shelter worker’s emotional video about a dog who had been waiting for a home for 700 days has captured the hearts of millions, leading to a life-changing adoption.
On March 25, a TikTok video posted by the account @lifesavingpixie went viral, showcasing Maror, a dog frozen in his kennel, staring at Aileen Betancourt, the shelter worker. Betancourt shared that Maror’s longing gaze was a daily occurrence, a silent plea for adoption after nearly two years in the shelter. Alongside him was Matzo, Maror’s inseparable kennel mate, who offered comfort but could not change their fate.
Despite being neutered, potty-trained, and friendly with everyone, Maror’s prolonged stay puzzled shelter staff and the 3.9 million viewers who watched the video. Maror was an ideal candidate for adoption, yet finding a home for him was complicated by his deep bond with Matzo. As a pair, the two were inseparable, complicating the search for a suitable family willing to adopt both dogs together.
In the video, Betancourt shared her bittersweet thoughts on the challenge of finding homes for bonded pairs, acknowledging that separating the dogs was heartbreaking but sometimes necessary. “Our biggest hope is for either pup to find a loving home — even if it means they go separately,” she wrote in the video caption.
The shelter’s persistence eventually paid off. After weeks of searching, they found a family in Canada willing to take both Maror and Matzo in. The joyful follow-up video showed the two dogs excitedly sprinting out of the shelter, ready to begin their journey to their new home.
As the transporter set out for Canada, shelter staff felt a mix of nerves and excitement, especially since it was Matzo’s first time in a car. But the happiness of sending them to their forever home outweighed the emotions of saying goodbye.
