Dog owners in Delaware now have an easier way to license their pets thanks to a new partnership between the state’s Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) and DocuPet, a platform designed to streamline dog registration.
Christina Motoyoshi, the Executive Director of the OAW, explained that the new system was developed to improve the process of registering dogs, as well as to raise awareness about the legal requirement for dog licenses. “We wanted to make it even easier for people to get a dog license and also raise awareness because a lot of people just don’t know that it’s required by law,” she said.
Through this new platform, dog owners receive a license tag with a unique code. If a pet goes missing, anyone who finds the dog can look up the code online. The OAW and DocuPet staff will then assist in reuniting the dog with its owner. Motoyoshi emphasized the importance of this service, noting that, “If someone finds your pet and it has that tag on it, they can get in touch with you very quickly and get that pet back to you.” She also highlighted the frequency of lost pets, citing the thousands of stray dogs picked up annually in Delaware.
In addition to the convenience and safety benefits, Motoyoshi stressed the broader public policy advantages of dog licensing. “It helps us get pets back home quickly and save precious limited shelter space for those animals that need it the most,” she said. “It also helps support animal welfare programs and services in the state.”
