Dogs Are Listening In: New Study Shows They Eavesdrop on Human Conversations

by Lisa

If you’ve ever noticed your dog perking up its ears during a casual conversation with a friend — especially when you discuss something exciting like heading out for dinner — you weren’t imagining it. A new study published in Animal Cognition has confirmed that dogs do indeed pay attention to human speech, recognizing meaningful content even when it’s not directed toward them.

Dogs Tune In to Human Speech

Previous research has shown that humans tend to speak to dogs in a particular tone, known as dog-directed speech (DDS), similar to the way people talk to babies. This tone helps grab a dog’s attention and makes it easier for them to recognize familiar words. However, scientists wanted to take it a step further and see if dogs could recognize their names or other familiar phrases when spoken in a more neutral tone, without the high-pitched, affectionate cadence.

Study Methodology

In the study, 57 dog owners read aloud from short passages, incorporating test phrases among standard sentences. Some of these test phrases were non-meaningful, like “Alfie, pass me a coffee!” while others were meaningful, such as “[Dog’s name], come on then!” which were chosen because they were frequently used by English-speaking dog owners during interactions. The pet parents recorded the phrases first in a normal voice and then in DDS.

Findings

The study’s findings revealed that dogs consistently responded to hearing their names, even in a monotonous tone. Dogs were slightly more likely to respond when their name was spoken in DDS, but they still recognized it in a neutral voice.

David Reby, the study’s lead author, explained, “Our research shows that dogs can pick out and recognize words relevant to them in an otherwise monotonous stream of speech, even when those words are not emphasized by the typical intonation cues we use to engage them.”

The Takeaway

It turns out that dogs are more attuned to our conversations than we might think. Whether you’re speaking to them in a high-pitched, loving voice or discussing dinner plans with a friend in a neutral tone, your dog is likely listening in. After all, if they follow you everywhere, including the bathroom, they’ve probably already mastered the art of eavesdropping.
