A beloved dog is safe and sound after a daring rescue from a mine shaft in Chewton Bushlands on Tuesday afternoon.
The Castlemaine SES responded first to reports of a dog that had fallen into a deep mine shaft. Upon arrival, they quickly assessed the situation and called in the CFA’s Oscar 1 Emergency Response Mine Rescue Brigade to handle the complex operation.
The rescue team conducted a thorough air quality check, confirming the need for breathing apparatus. The Chewton CFA provided the necessary gear, and one of the Oscar 1 members was lowered 15 metres into the shaft with support from Castlemaine SES’s steep angle rescue team stationed above.
The operation, which took place just before 4pm, ended successfully when the dog was brought safely to the surface and reunited with its grateful owner.
Castlemaine SES Section Lead Daniel Bone praised the collaborative effort of the emergency teams, noting, “Mine rescues are rare and challenging, so it’s especially rewarding when we have a successful outcome.”
Though visibly shaken, the dog appeared unhurt and was soon seen receiving affectionate cuddles from its owner. A vet check is anticipated, but the pup’s ordeal seems to have ended with a stroke of luck.
