A study underscores how the rapid ascent of certain dog breeds into the limelight can inadvertently trigger a cycle of misguided adoption, underscoring the need for informed decision-making and responsible pet ownership.
The interplay between trending phenomena and society is not a novel concept, nor is it exclusively attributable to the digital age. Instances can be drawn from history, such as the reverence bestowed upon the Lhasa Apso dogs of Tibet, which, apart from being the official breed of the Dalai Lama, are emblematic of esteem. Nevertheless, in the present age of information abundance, Professor Daniele dos Santos Martins, hailing from the University of the South Pacific’s Pira Sunonga Faculty of Animal Technology and Food Engineering (FZEA), laments that these animals still find themselves entering households under less-than-ideal circumstances, often leading to unprepared guardianship. The advent of certain breeds on social media or within visual media can invariably trigger a spike in demand for said breeds.
“This prevailing trend carries detrimental ramifications for both animals and their caretakers, as many individuals remain uninformed about the distinct needs of these breeds, inadvertently causing inconveniences for both parties,” asserts experts in animal welfare. The repercussions of acquiring a dog breed without adequate prior research into their requisites and compatibility with family dynamics can extend beyond canine to human relationships, fueling conflicts, discord, and even impatience toward the newly introduced pet. The tragic outcome of such oversights often culminates in the abandonment of the animals.
The decision to welcome a pet into one’s life is undoubtedly a multifaceted undertaking. Pets, sentient beings with distinct needs divergent from those of humans, intertwine their fate with their human caretakers, developing an irreplaceable bond. Over time, pets metamorphose into cherished members of the familial fabric. Throughout the decades, Brazil has witnessed the zenith of several dog breeds, ranging from the Pekingese and German Shepherd to the Yorkshire Terrier and Siberian Husky. Presently, the spotlight rests on the German Spitz, colloquially known as the Pomeranian Lulu.
This reinforces the adage that initial infatuation is just the beginning. To foster a harmonious coexistence, a profound understanding of the animal’s unique attributes is requisite, ascertaining whether the chosen companion will flourish within the confines of their new home. Daniel elucidates, “Animals possess physical and psychological prerequisites that divulge their expectations from their environment. When these requirements remain unmet, they manifest what we term as stereotypes.” She underscores the fact that each breed diverges significantly. “Certain breeds demand more intense, rapid physical activity compared to others. Therefore, stifling a hyperactive animal’s vitality renders its environment’s expectations null, rerouting this energy elsewhere. Thus, the outcome is frequently a genetic alteration.”
The Specter of Genetic Manipulation
One of the pernicious consequences begotten by trend-fueled commercialization is irresponsible crossbreeding, which engenders shifts in breed traits, even facilitating genetic modification. Notably, the poodle’s trajectory in Brazil throughout the 1990s exemplifies this trend. Diminutive sizes were sought-after by customers, leading breeders to downsize breeds. Regrettably, the outcome encompassed dogs plagued by an array of issues, ultimately culminating in abandonment.
Daniel delves into the ramifications of such intervention, stating, “This interference culminates in altering particular facets of the equation. Among these alterations, we can spotlight shifts in physique and coat hue.” She elucidates that certain breeds have exhibited heightened susceptibility to afflictions such as skin, ocular, and respiratory disorders. “In select breeds, we can pinpoint grave joint afflictions,” she adds.
A Broader Spectrum of Concern
The predicament of misguided adoption or purchase is not exclusive to dogs. Other creatures, such as rodents, rabbits, and reptiles, also confront parallel challenges. Daniel accentuates, “For instance, we grapple with issues pertaining to owners of rodents, rabbits, and reptiles. Many acquire these animals devoid of comprehending their biology, behaviors, and, most crucially, dietary preferences.”
