CALGARY – Amber, a German Shepherd who suffered abuse in August, has found a new home with the very person who reported the abuse, in a heartwarming turn of events.
In a harrowing incident, law enforcement officers were called to Inglewood in response to reports of a man abusing a dog while on a walk on the evening of August 15. According to an August 19 news release, a brave witness confronted the alleged abuser about his treatment of the animal. In response, the suspect reportedly made threats towards the witness.
Initially, the Calgary Police Service struggled to locate the suspect but promptly notified Calgary Community Standards and the Calgary Humane Society (CHS) about the incident.
On August 17, a tip provided crucial information to the authorities, allowing them to identify the suspect. Consequently, a joint investigation was launched by law enforcement officers in collaboration with the CHS’s Protection and Investigations Department.
The dog in question was under the care of the Alberta Rescue Foundation (ARF) and was being fostered by the alleged suspect at the time of the abuse. ARF swiftly removed the dog from the suspect’s custody.
Amber received a thorough examination from a forensic veterinarian, who confirmed that her injuries were consistent with abuse. After the assessment, Amber was entrusted back to ARF’s care.
In a touching twist of fate, Amber has now been adopted by the individual who reported the abuse, Dennis Sorensen.
Sorensen expressed his excitement about welcoming Amber into his home, saying, “She’ll be a fantastic dog for walks along the river and through the Inglewood neighborhood. I think there is going to be a lot more hair in the house.”
He also conveyed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from fellow Calgarians who rallied behind him when news of the alleged abuse came to light. Many Calgarians reached out to assist Sorensen in ensuring Amber’s safe return to ARF’s care.
Sorensen shared his motivations for taking action, stating, “I just kind of wanted to de-escalate the situation. But once that wasn’t going anywhere, I thought it best to document it. It’s a very emotional event for people. I don’t think we could have asked for a better ending.”
