THESSALONIKI, Greece — A tragic incident unfolded in the quiet village of Neochorouda, located approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Thessaloniki, Greece, as three shepherd dogs escaped their yard and fatally mauled a 50-year-old woman in her garden on Sunday.
The dreadful attack occurred around 2 p.m. when the dogs managed to slip through a hole in their owners’ fence, covering a distance of about 80 meters (260 feet) to reach the woman who was working in her garden, according to local authorities.
A man, described by police as deaf-mute, was assisting the woman with gardening tasks but was at a distance when the attack occurred, unable to hear her screams. Concerned neighbors rushed to her aid, successfully prying the dogs away. Despite their efforts, the woman suffered severe injuries and extensive bleeding. First responders, arriving promptly with an ambulance, tragically confirmed her death, as reported by the police.
The 37-year-old owner of the dogs was taken into custody and is set to face legal proceedings before a prosecutor on Monday morning. The dogs have been confined to a kennel and are slated to be euthanized, according to law enforcement authorities.
