Residents in Curtis Park express frustration following the closure of the Sierra 2 Dog Park, a temporary space created by the city after over two decades of allowing off-leash hours at the neighborhood park.
Initially set up with fencing, the temporary dog park has now been closed, leading to discontent among local dog owners.
In response, the city is contemplating the establishment of a new dog park in Land Park, several miles away from the community accustomed to daily use of the Sierra 2 space.
Historically, dogs were permitted off-leash during specific hours in the morning and evening at the neighborhood park. However, in 2020, an influx of dog owners from across the community resulted in canines being let loose at all hours, prompting numerous complaints to the city.
While no dog-related incidents were officially documented, the city received criticism asserting that the 1.5-acre space within the community park was too small and posed safety risks for both dogs and park visitors.
Disputing the city’s stance, dog owners argue that the closure would significantly impact their lives and well-being, emphasizing the importance of accessible community spaces for both residents and their pets.
A concerned dog owner stated, “For me, it would be a major impact on my life and well-being and my ability to access the community around here. And my dog too, he gets exercise and enjoyment from getting to be at the park with other people and also run around.”
The city council is set to address the matter during Tuesday’s city council meeting, contemplating the creation of a new dog park at William Land Park.
City officials cite safety and maintenance challenges arising from shared space for off-leash dog use, including conflicts with youth soccer, community events, and open play.
