GROTON, Massachusetts – Authorities are actively searching for a driver responsible for a hit-and-run incident that left a police K9 seriously injured in Groton on Wednesday afternoon.
The injured K9, identified as Bane, a black Labrador, is reported to be in serious but stable condition as of Thursday. The incident occurred on Pleasant Street, near the Groton police headquarters, around 4:50 p.m.
The vehicle, which struck Bane, fled the scene in the direction of Ayer, according to police. A Groton resident who witnessed the incident and the drivers of two other vehicles stopped to assist the injured police dog.
In an official statement, the Groton Police expressed their gratitude to the four citizens who stopped to help Bane. The injuries sustained by the K9 include a broken femur, dislocated hip, broken ribs, and punctured lungs.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or possessing footage captured on Pleasant Street around the time of the incident to come forward and contact the police.
The search for the hit-and-run driver is ongoing as the community rallies behind Bane’s recovery, emphasizing the need for cooperation to bring the responsible party to justice.
