Yellowknife resident Terry Woolf, known locally as “Sled-dog Santa,” has embraced a unique holiday tradition for the past 15 years. Annually, or every two to three years depending on timing and weather conditions, Woolf transforms into Santa Claus and takes to the snowy trails.
This year, Woolf, donned in the iconic red suit, embarked on his dog-sled adventure around 1 p.m. on Saturday. The route commenced in Yellowknife’s Back Bay, winding through the picturesque houseboat community before making a loop back.
For Woolf, the dog-sled ride serves as “ground-level training” for Santa Claus, preparing him for the upcoming Christmas Eve present-delivery marathon. The festive journey allows Woolf to connect with the community and spread holiday cheer in a unique and memorable way.
However, on this special dog-sled run, you won’t hear the traditional “Ho Ho Ho” from Santa Woolf. The refrain is too reminiscent of “Woah,” the command mushers use to instruct their sled dogs to stop, adding a whimsical touch to the holiday tradition.
