Alaska State Troopers announced plans to resume search efforts on Tuesday for a woman who went missing in an Anchorage area river over the weekend after attempting to rescue a dog, according to official statements.
The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday when a man and a woman were walking along the North Fork Eagle River Trail. The situation unfolded as one of their dogs ventured into the water, prompting both individuals to enter the river in an effort to assist the animal, as outlined in a statement released by Alaska State Troopers on Monday.
Tragically, the woman disappeared after entering an open section of water in the Eagle River. Austin McDaniel, communication director for Alaska State Troopers, stated, “That was the last she was seen by the adult male that was with her.”
A dive and search team, along with troopers, conducted an extensive search under the ice on Sunday but were unable to locate the missing woman. The upcoming search operation is scheduled for Tuesday.
The man involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries.
The trailhead of the North Fork Eagle River Trail is situated approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage. The Eagle River flows northwest in the region, north of downtown, ultimately leading into the Cook Inlet. The circumstances surrounding the woman’s disappearance highlight the challenges and risks associated with rescue attempts in icy conditions, prompting ongoing efforts to locate her.
