Richmond, Virginia – A heartwarming tale of rescue and recovery has unfolded in southside Richmond, where a local animal shelter describes a dog‘s journey as a “Christmas miracle.” The protagonist, a dog named Holly, was spotted in distress, running around the area, prompting the Richmond Animal Care and Control team to embark on a challenging mission to provide her aid.
Despite the initial difficulties in capturing Holly, the dedicated team managed to secure her on Thursday, the 21st. According to Robert Leinberger, Program and Operations Supervisor, Holly, a chow mix type dog, was found wearing a jacket, triggering multiple calls for assistance. Once apprehended, the team began Holly’s road to recovery.
Upon closer examination, it became apparent that Holly needed urgent help. “We were able to remove that jacket, found out she had just a terrible skin condition that’s incredibly uncomfortable for her,” explained Leinberger. This skin condition had led to complications and infections, but with proper care, Holly is now on the path to healing.
RACC employees provided baths and continuous care, significantly improving Holly’s condition. Despite the progress, her recovery journey is not yet complete. “Her skin is on the mend. It’s starting to improve. She’s getting proper nutrition, plenty of water, and a nice warm bed,” said Leinberger, highlighting the ongoing commitment to Holly’s well-being.
While such rescue efforts are not uncommon for RACC, Holly’s case stood out due to the dog’s condition and the constant calls received. The team is now eager to identify Holly’s owner, expressing curiosity about her origins. “We’re just a little curious to who she might belong to. We want to chat with that person and see maybe they were trying to look for her or don’t realize that she’s loose or do realize that she’s loose and don’t know that she’s currently here,” shared Leinberger.
If Holly’s owner cannot be located, the RACC team pledges to continue caring for her and eventually put her up for adoption once she is fully ready.
