In a tragic incident that unfolded last summer at a Juniper Ridge homeless camp in Bend, Oregon, three dogs responsible for fatally mauling a man have been ordered to be humanely euthanized. The Deschutes County Dog Board issued the order on Tuesday after a thorough review of evidence and testimony surrounding the attack.
The victim, Joseph Keeton, lost his life in July of last year as a result of the attack by the dogs named DJ, Littlez, and Precious. The owner of the dogs, Jessica Rae (Charity) McCleery, 38, recently pleaded guilty to charges of criminally negligent homicide and maintaining a dangerous dog. She received a three-year prison term for her role in the tragic incident.
The decision to euthanize the dogs was based on the findings that all three animals were actively involved in the mauling that led to Keeton’s death. The Deschutes County Dog Board deemed the dogs dangerous, in accordance with state statutes and court judgments. With the forfeiture ordered by the Circuit Court, the dogs currently have no owner or keeper.
Deputy District Attorney Rosalie Beaumont revealed in court that McCleery’s dogs had previously caused injuries to three individuals, even when McCleery was present. Beaumont emphasized that the crime was entirely preventable had McCleery taken adequate measures to restrain or contain her dogs on the fateful night.
The tragic incident highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential consequences when dangerous animals are not properly managed. The decision to euthanize the dogs serves as a solemn reminder of the need for owners to ensure the safety of both their pets and the community.
