Kolkata, February 1, 2024 – In a swift response to distress calls and social media messages, officers from the Jadavpur Police rescued a one-year-old pet dog that was found trapped inside a locked flat in Jadavpur’s Poddarnagar area. The rescue operation unfolded on Tuesday around 3 pm, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Concerned residents had notified the Golf Green Police Station and reached out to the police via Facebook, seeking intervention for the distressed canine. As the incident fell under the jurisdiction of the Jadavpur police station, the case was promptly assigned to Mrinal Kanti Mukherjee, the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jadavpur PS.
Mukherjee, known for his compassion toward animals, had previously rescued two dogs in 2019 following a brutal attack on multiple dogs at the NRS hostel premises, which resulted in the unfortunate death of 16 dogs. Displaying the same dedication, he took charge of the recent rescue operation in Jadavpur.
“We received information about a Spitz trapped inside a flat in the Bikramgarh Bazar area, with the flat securely locked from the outside. The residents had been away the previous night, and the continuous moaning of the trapped dog alerted the local community, including a woman residing on the ground floor of the building. She took the initiative to contact us,” shared a joint Commissioner of Police at Lalbazar.
Efforts to reach the owner were hindered as her phone was found switched off, prompting the police to take immediate action. After several unsuccessful attempts, officers decided to break open the lock and rescue the distressed pet. The incident unfolded after the police’s repeated attempts to contact the owner around 3 pm on Tuesday.
Later in the night, the pet dog, along with the flat, was handed over to the legal owner with a stern warning against leaving the pet alone in the locked flat. The prompt and compassionate response from the Jadavpur Police reflects their commitment to ensuring the welfare of animals in distress.
