KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Feed-a-Pet program in Knox County is currently grappling with a pressing issue: a severe shortage of pet food donations. This initiative, overseen by the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee (CAC), serves as a lifeline for limited-income older adults in the region by providing pet food to their beloved animal companions.
The program, which has been a beacon of hope for seniors and their pets, is currently experiencing a critical depletion of its pet food supplies. To meet the needs of 96 limited-income older adults throughout Knox County in October, they urgently require approximately 3,000 pounds of pet food.
According to the CAC, the consequences of this shortage are dire, as many program participants find themselves struggling to afford both their own sustenance and that of their furry friends. Ms. R, a widow on a tight budget, relies on the Feed-a-Pet program to ensure her 6-year-old pet, Hazel, is well-fed. She shared her experience, stating, “I am on a limited income. With the Feed-A-Pet program, I don’t have to worry because I know when it’s the first of the month, whether I have anything left or not, she is going to be fed. If you are a senior on a limited income and you get $900 a month, you have to pay your rent, you have to pay your utilities, medicines, and groceries. Pet food may be something you can’t afford.”
In response to this critical situation, the program is reaching out to the community for assistance. They are specifically seeking donations of dry dog and cat food, with a preference for bags weighing less than 10 pounds to accommodate individuals who may have difficulty lifting heavier items.
This call for pet food donations underscores the essential role that the Feed-a-Pet program plays in supporting the well-being of both seniors and their cherished animal companions in Knox County.
