After an exhaustive week-long search, authorities have suspended efforts to locate an 80-year-old man, Robert McKean, and his dog, Lexi, who went missing in the Whistler area. McKean was reported missing on October 9 from Whistler’s Alpine Meadows neighborhood, and he was last seen walking his dog.
This extensive search effort involved 300 search and rescue personnel from 21 search teams, who collectively invested 2,600 hours in scouring the area for any trace of McKean. These dedicated volunteers were aided by RCMP officers, Whistler and Garibaldi firefighters, and other members of the community. The search employed a variety of resources, including ground teams, canine units, helicopters, drones, and steep-terrain rope teams. Additionally, individuals in the neighborhood assisted by making inquiries, yet no substantial leads were discovered. On Sunday at 1 p.m., the decision was made to suspend the search.
Staff Sgt. Sascha Banks expressed the gratitude of Mr. McKean’s family and thanked all those who participated in the search, including search and rescue members from across the province, Whistler Fire Rescue Service, Garibaldi Fire, and community volunteers.
The Whistler RCMP continues its investigation and plans for further search operations to locate Robert McKean. They are keen to speak with anyone who may have seen McKean and Lexi on Monday, October 9. Police also urge the public to remain vigilant, especially in the Alpine Meadows area, located a few minutes north of Whistler’s town center.
At the time of his disappearance, McKean was wearing blue size 7 New Balance running shoes, blue jeans, a green jacket over a blue Canucks jersey, and a tan ballcap with a blue rim. Lexi was on a blue and white checkered leash attached to a blue harness.
