In a recent viral video, posted by Washington state-based TikTok user Mckenna, a curious canine’s reaction to his owner’s gasps has sparked intriguing conversations and garnered significant attention.
The footage captures the moment when the pit bull mix, Pepperoni, reacts to the gasp by suddenly jumping up, appearing startled, and fixating his gaze on his 26-year-old owner. In an attempt to reassure her pet, Mckenna says, “Sorry buddy, it’s OK.” However, despite the comforting words, Pepperoni continues to appear on edge, maintaining his look of concern until the video concludes.
Renee Rhoades, a canine behaviorist at R+Dogs based in the United Kingdom, provided insight into the dog’s response in the video. Rhoades remarked, “In the video, we see a dog with a very quick response to hearing this auditory sound, jumping up. We see ‘whale eye,’ where we can observe the whites of the dog’s eyes. This indicates tension in the dog’s face. Additionally, the dog performs a quick lip lick, which is another sign of stress. Notably, the dog positions its body to increase the distance from the human. This is not indicative of an excited dog.”
Rhoades further explained, “There are numerous reasons for gasping, but ultimately, it renders our behavior unpredictable to the dog. Dogs, like humans, are unsettled by unpredictability, particularly when they cannot comprehend the circumstances or effectively communicate with their human counterparts.”
