Two West Vancouver councillors, Linda Watt and Christine Cassidy, are championing an initiative to relax current bylaws that impose restrictions on where dogs are permitted within the municipality. They are scheduled to present their proposal at the council meeting on October 30, with the aim of rendering West Vancouver a more dog-friendly locale, which includes reintroducing dogs to two currently restricted areas: the Centennial Seawalk in Ambleside and Dundarave, as well as the Horseshoe Bay Park areas.
The initiative aims to allow leashed dogs to once again enjoy these popular walking areas, which are frequently frequented by pet owners. Additionally, the councillors believe it is time to establish a comprehensive, long-term strategy that promotes canine friendliness throughout West Vancouver.
Presently, dogs are prohibited from the Seawalk in West Vancouver and are confined to a designated dog run area separated from the public walkway by a chain-link fence. Moreover, they are not permitted within a five-meter radius of various public locations in the municipality, including playgrounds, sports fields, golf courses, tennis courts, basketball courts, recreational swimming beaches, and picnic areas. This proposal seeks to reconsider and potentially revise these regulations in favor of a more inclusive approach to canine companionship in West Vancouver.
