Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Initiative to Promote Indigenous Dog Breeds.
In a significant development, Indian dog breeds, such as the Rampur Hound, Himachali Shepherd, Gaddi, Bakharwal, and the Tibetan Mastiff, are poised to assume essential roles in police duties, which include detecting suspects, narcotics, and explosives, as well as patrolling high-risk areas, according to officials.
The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), which include the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), are on the verge of incorporating indigenous dog breeds into their ranks. Trials involving breeds like the Rampur Hound are already in progress, and an official order has been issued to evaluate the Himalayan mountain canines.
Currently, the majority of police dogs in India are foreign breeds, encompassing the likes of German Shepherds, Labradors, Belgian Malinois, and Cocker Spaniels.
A Home Ministry official revealed, “The trial of the Indian dog breed Mudhol Hound has already been concluded by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Trials of a few other Indian dog breeds, such as the Rampur Hound, are also underway at the canine training centers of the CRPF and the BSF.”
Furthermore, the Ministry has initiated trials for Himalayan mountain dogs, including the Himachali Shepherd, Gaddi, Bakharwal, and the Tibetan Mastiff, conducted concurrently by the Border Security Force (BSF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
This development is a stride forward in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to promote native dog breeds in India through scientific means, offering them opportunities to play vital roles in national security and law enforcement efforts.
