In a heartwarming testament to the bond between rescue dogs and their dedicated families, one Orange County household is now celebrating a prestigious recognition. People Magazine, in the wake of a nationwide contest and public vote, has officially dubbed their 5-year-old terrier, Hobie, the “Cutest Rescue Dog.”
For those who adore their canine companions and believe them to be the epitome of cuteness, having that sentiment officially validated is a rare and cherished honor. The esteemed title was conferred upon Hobie, a lovable terrier, to the delight of his adoptive family, who hail from Coto de Caza. Hobie’s journey to fame began when he found his forever home with Christin Bernhardt and her husband, Joern Riemer, in July 2022, after they adopted him from the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter.
Reflecting on the victory, Christin Bernhardt expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support Hobie received during the contest, saying, “We shared news of the contest with our colleagues at work. They went all out, and the city of Laguna Beach put him on social media — he was on Instagram and Twitter. They made it happen for Hobie, I’m really convinced of that.”
Hobie’s newfound celebrity status not only brings joy to his family but also benefits the wider community. The national recognition includes a generous $1,000 donation to a nonprofit organization chosen by the winning family and a year’s supply of Pedigree dog food.
This accolade is but the latest chapter in Hobie’s remarkable journey from the streets of Tijuana. As reported last month in the Daily Pilot, Hobie’s story began when compassionate rescuers found him foraging for food at a taco stand in Tijuana. Despite the indifference of the stand owner, who sought to drive him away, Hobie’s fate took a turn for the better, culminating in the well-deserved title of “Cutest Rescue Dog.”
Hobie’s heartwarming tale serves as a testament to the transformative power of love and compassion, illustrating the beauty of second chances and the incredible bonds that can form between humans and their rescued four-legged friends.
